NEVER SLEEP AGAIN

Freddy Krueger

Probably everyone, who was born in 80’s, like myself, remembers that scary nights, when they were watching scary movie while their parents were long asleep. I think everyone remembers, how scared they were to look at the closet, to keep their leg uncovered by blanket, to switch off the lights or checked under the bed or there is no monster hiding. I was one of those kids, I think we all were.

Even though now these classic movies look funny more than scary, but they were very well done many years ago. Even if we hear soundtrack playing from those movies, we still feel shivers running through our bodies.

The first one, which truly scared me was probably A Nightmare on the Elm Street. The main character Freddy Krueger with his knives comes back to life in kids dreams kills them one by one while they are asleep. Probably everyone still remembers his tagline ‘Never Sleep Again’.

THE SHINING, Jack Nicholson, 1980

Another one, which still makes me scared to leave hotel room at night, is The Shining. This movie was made in 1980, but was very scary, it stayed in everyone’s memory for long time. I even watched it many times again over the years. Hollywood made part II of The Shining recently, but it doesn’t have the same effect like original, also like A Nightmare on the Elm street remake. There are many remakes of classic movies these days and even if they have better special effects, but it will never be as good as originals were. They are more gross than scary and they will neve bring that nostalgic feeling about good old days.

Non the less The Exorcist and Halloween are playing important role in our childhoods. Both movies were created in 1978, way before I was born, but it still was too scary even with 70’s special effects. Especially that creepy soundtrack, which everyone still remembers.

Halloween Trailer (1978)

There are of course many more good classical horror movies, like Scream, Psycho, Chucky, Poltergeist, The Silence of the Lambs and others, about which I could talk many hours. So, like I said, no matter how cheesy these old movies look like for us now, but classic villains laid the foundation for the horror genre and they always will be remembered, especially on Halloween each year.
